Enova's Proprietary Post Transmission (Graphic: Business Wire)

12th Mar 2007 06:00

Enova Systems (AMEX:ENA) (AIM:ENV) (AIM:ENVS), an early stageproduction company in an emerging industry and a leading developer ofproprietary electric, hybrid and fuel cell digital power managementsystems, is pleased to announce that its unique proprietary PostTransmission hybrid systems are being used to help power the nation'sfirst production Hybrid School Buses via IC Corp. Florida's ManateeSchool district is the first in the nation to receive the productionHybrid School Buses. The buses were officially delivered on Friday,March 9th, 2007. £ Other school districts around the country will soon be receivingthe remaining seventeen (17) IC Corporation hybrid school busesawarded by Advanced Energy. Manatee School District's two (2) hybridschool buses are part of the nineteen (19) hybrid buses awardednationwide by Advanced Energy, a non-profit corporation that initiateda buyer's consortium of school districts, state energy agencies andstudent transportation providers. £ Mike Staran, Enova's Executive Vice President, said: "EnovaSystems' unique Post Transmission System continues to offer anon-invasive solution to enter the hybrid vehicle market in either theretrofit or new vehicle segment. We are privileged to be partneredwith IC Corp., the nation's largest School Bus manufacturer, in thisgroundbreaking effort." £ Enova's Post Transmission System has proven, in otherapplications, to be a non-invasive system that has required little tono modification to chassis, body, instrument panel, etc. In addition, the system does not intrude on nor require any alteration to theEngine Control/Communication system, thus avoiding any emissionscertification issues. The system monitors but does not impact anythingwithin the existing engine and does not effect the existing enginecalibration. The hybrid system can be designed as either a ChargeSustaining or Charge Depleting ("Plug In") system. The ChargeSustaining System utilizes relatively small batteries which aremaintained within specified range of State of Charge (SOC) over theentire drive cycle. Battery charge is maintained by the on-boardequipment and is not normally recharged from the grid except as neededfor cell balancing. The Charge Depleting System utilizes a largerbattery based on advanced battery chemistry that provides storedenergy intended to be drawn down over the driving cycle, thusoptimizing fuel economy, subsequent to an overnight charge. £ Depending on the route, fuel economy miles per gallon (mpg)improvement is from 30% to 55% or better for a Post TransmissionCharge Sustaining System, and 70-100% or better for Post TransmissionCharge Depleting Systems. Emission improvements vary with thepollutant being measured and has shown up to a 90% improvement attimes on Particulate Matter based on load and operating conditiondependent. £ Enova has also partnered with IC Corporation to provide hybridsystems for their new line of hybrid commercial buses. The bus marketin which IC Corporation plans to compete is approximately 18,000 unitsannually. The market can be broken into 2 primary segments - publicand private. It is now estimated that 30% of the buses purchased forpublic transit are some form of hybrid/alternate fuel vehicles andanalysts project this number to grow significantly over the next 5years. Enova's Post Transmission system is also used by the USMilitary, Mack Truck and most recently on thirteen (13) Verizonservice vans. Enova expects volumes for the systems to increase ascustomers realize the benefits that it offers for both the new andretrofit markets. £ Additional Information: £ This news release contains forward-looking statements relating toEnova Systems and its products that are intended to be covered by thesafe harbor for forward-looking statements provided by the PrivateSecurities Litigation Reform Act of 1995.
