6 December 2013 FirstGroup appoints John McFarlane as Chairman FirstGroup plc announces that John McFarlane will join the board with immediateeffect, and succeed Martin Gilbert as Chairman effective 1 January 2014, atwhich time Martin will retire from the board. John is chairman of Aviva plc, the UK's largest insurance group by assets,having joined the board in September 2011, during which period he spent eightmonths in an executive capacity pending the appointment of a new CEO.Considerable progress has been made at Aviva under his leadership. John is also non-executive director of Westfield Holdings Ltd, the world'slargest retail mall operator headquartered in Sydney, with flagshipdevelopments in London, and of Old Oak Holdings Ltd, a London-basedprivately-owned financial holding company. John spent over 38 years in the international financial institutions sector,including ten years as CEO of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited.ANZ is now one of the top 20 banks in the world by market capitalisation. Priorto that, he was an executive director at Standard Chartered, and head ofCitibank in the UK. His early career was with Ford in Dagenham inmanufacturing. More recently, in October 2008, he joined the board of the RoyalBank of Scotland Group as a non-executive director to assist in its recoverypost the global financial crisis.
