Board Appointment

WS Atkins plc chairman, Ed Wallis, has announced his intention to retire during the final year of his second term on 31 January 2010.

The Board of WS Atkins plc (Atkins) announces the appointment of Allan Cook CBE as non-executive director and chairman-elect with effect from 10 September 2009. Mr Cook will take over as chairman on 1 February 2010.

Keith Clarke, chief executive said: "On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Ed for his commitment and contribution to Atkins and to wish him well for the future.  Allan is highly respected in the aerospace and defence industries and I am delighted to welcome him as our chairman-elect."

Mr Cook (59) is currently chief executive of Cobham PLC, a position from which he retires on 31 December 2009. He is a chartered engineer with more than 30 years' international experience in the automotive, aerospace and defence industries. Prior to Cobham PLC, Mr Cook held positions at GEC-Marconi, BAE Systems and Hughes Electronics. He is chairman of the National Skills Academy for Manufacturing, president of the aerospace and defence industries association of Europe (ASD), a director of the Industry Forum and a committee member of the UK Ministerial Advisory Group for Manufacturing.  He was awarded a CBE in the Queen's New Year's Honours list in 2008.

There are no other disclosures required in respect of Mr Cook pursuant to Rule 9.6.13 of the Listing Rules of the Financial Services Authority.
