APPOINTMENT OF NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Thomas Thune Andersen has been appointed to the Board of Scottish and Southern Energy plc ("SSE"), as a non-Executive Director with effect from 1 January 2009.

Mr Andersen is Chief Executive of Maersk Oil, Partner, Member of Group Executive Board A.P. Moller-Maersk as well as director or chairman of a number of companies within the AP Moller-Maersk Group. The Group is involved in industries such as transportation, oil production and shipbuilding, operates in over 100 countries and has its headquarters in Copenhagen. Mr Andersen is a Freeman of the City of London.

The appointment of Mr Andersen means SSE's Board will comprise four executive directors and five independent non-executive directors, in addition to the chairman.

Lord Smith of Kelvin, Chairman of SSE, said:

"SSE now operates in a global market for energy and has a growing interest in wind farm developments in continental Europe. These factors, combined with his operational experience, mean Thomas will complement very well the skills of the Board and I am looking forward to working with him."
