Barratt Developments PLC03 July 2006 3 July 2006 Barratt wins nine former school sites in West Scotland for 1,400 new homes worth £185m Barratt Developments plc has secured nine redundant school sites in South Lanarkshire, West Scotland, to build almost 1,400 new homes worth more than £185 million. The project - one of the largest single regeneration programmes undertaken byBarratt in recent years - will start next year and run on until 2011. As part of the scheme, specialist contractors will also be building brand newreplacement schools. Barratt Group Chief Executive David Pretty said: "Our West Scotland division isalready one of the largest housing providers in Scotland and this importantpartnership project with South Lanarkshire Council will form a major part of itsoutput going forward for the next five years. "In common with major population centres across the UK, West Scotland isundergoing a period of historic renewal and transformation and we're very proudto be playing a key role in that." He added: "New homes for all sectors of the market, alongside newstate-of-the-art schools, can only be tremendously good news for the SouthLanarkshire area, where new housing is in seriously short supply." Disposal of the redundant South Lanarkshire school sites is part of the widerupgrading and funding of educational facilities in Scotland. In total, Barratt will build some 1,400 apartments and houses on 85 acres offormer school land, including flats and terraced houses aimed at first-timebuyers and starting at under £100,000. Construction firm Amec will be buildingnew schools on or near the old sites. The school sites are Ballerup Primary, Duncanrig High, Hunter High, John OgilvieHigh and St Bride's School, all in East Kilbride; Earnock High and Holy CrossSchool, both in Hamilton; Cathkin High, Cambuslang; and Uddingston Grammar,Uddingston. In recent months, Barratt has contracted on 58 key new sites across England,Scotland and Wales to produce over 9,000 new homes with a development value of£1.5bn. The South Lanarkshire project is the largest of them, but others includeWhitworth Park in Spennymoor, County Durham, for 800 new homes, and majorbrownfield sites in Crayford, Kent (440 homes), Harlow, Essex (530), andSwansea, South Wales (340). Last year, Barratt also had an outstanding run of successes, which includedwinning a key role in building England's largest new community at Telford,Shropshire, where the company will provide at least 1,000 homes; in Lancashire,where a Barratt joint venture is preferred developer for East Central Rochdaleto build around 1,500 new homes; and in West Hendon, north-west London, where itis working in partnership with Barnet Council and Metropolitan Housing Trust totransform time-expired estates with 2,000 new homes. Barratt has also successfully won key planning consents to provide some 6,600homes with a development value of £1.3bn over the next few years. The largest isfor 750 homes on the former GlaxoSmithKline premises in west London, known asNorth Brentford Quarter. In addition, Barratt has agreed over 30 social housing partnership projects isrecent months, which will provide 1,200 homes with a development value of £142m.These will be developed in co-operation with local authorities, housingassociations and other bodies to provide housing for rent, shared ownership, keyworkers and special needs accommodation.
