Atkins set to win Crossrail Architectural Component contract
Crossrail Ltd has announced its intention to award the Architectural Component contract for all of its stations and associated structures to design and engineering consultancy Atkins. This award covers the design and specification of interior elements such as the wall and ceiling finishes, cladding systems, seating, lighting, and wayfinding.
The Atkins team includes specialist designers from Grimshaw Architects who will be helping to deliver the design excellence required for this key package of works.
Simon Layzell, Atkins' Crossrail programme delivery director said: "Crossrail is set to be one of the most heavily used lines in the UK and getting the interior design right at the stations is crucial.
"Integrating art into the fabric of the architecture, and considering light, tactile, aural and visual qualities alongside practical and functional performance will deliver a unique travelling experience. Crossrail will become a benchmark in world transport infrastructure design".
Once the contract is signed Atkins will work with Crossrail Ltd and the individually appointed package of works teams to create a design toolkit. This will consist of a palette of materials and a range of components that will allow for individual choice whilst ensuring a consistent line-wide identity and creating value through economies of scale.
The Architectural Component contract is due to be awarded under the Crossrail Design Framework from which Atkins has already jointly won (with Arup) contracts covering Bored Tunnel Design, and multi-disciplinary engineering & design on Tottenham Court Road station.
Atkins is one of the world's leading engineering design consultancies in the metro field. Other projects currently being worked on include the Dubai Metro - opening on 9 September 2009, the Copenhagen metro capacity upgrade, expansion of the Hong Kong Metro system, and South Africa's Gautrain.
