Meggitt PLC14 June 2005 For immediate release 14 June 2005 Meggitt PLC Meggitt wins Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine condition monitoring Meggitt PLC (Meggitt), the international aerospace, defence and electronicsensors group, today announces that Vibro-Meter, a wholly owned subsidiary ofMeggitt, has been contracted by Rolls-Royce to provide the on-engine monitoringunit (EMU) for its Trent 1000 engine. As the launch engine on the Boeing 787 'Dreamliner', the Trent 1000 will have its first test in early 2006 and firstflight in 2007. The value of the EMU contract to Meggitt is estimated at morethan £50 million over the next 20 years. The EMU will be a significant element in Rolls-Royce's Total Care programme(provision of comprehensive engine maintenance for airlines). Via a wide rangeof parameters-more than 30 external and internal sensor inputs-it will identifyand quantify the engine's condition over many thousands of flying hours. TheEMU system comprising Meggitt's state of the art platform and Rolls-Royce'sproprietary algorithms will continuously acquire and process data, detectanomalies and provide the most advanced, prognostic engine health managementdata in the world. Richard Greaves, Managing Director of Meggitt's Aerospace Systems' division ofwhich Vibro-Meter forms a part, says: 'In today's immensely pressuredmarketplace, simple monitoring for potential problems is not good enough. Toreduce operating costs, it is essential to have the diagnostic and prognosticcapability to actively manage the maintenance of engines and other systems. TheEMU system is in the vanguard of predictive tools, enabling the maintenance ofaero engine's to be conducted in a proactive manner identifying engine faultsprecisely, and allowing maintenance activities to be scheduled thus avoidingunnecessary surprises. The selection of Vibro-Meter by Rolls-Royce follows a close working relationshipestablished between the two companies during the development of the on-engineEMU for the Airbus A380's Trent 900 engine. The Trent 1000 EMU Integrated Product Team (IPT), which will include Vibro-Meterpersonnel, will be based at Rolls-Royce's Bristol facility in the UnitedKingdom.
