Meggitt awarded contract to supply targetry for British Army
Meggitt, a leading international company specialising in components and sub-systems for aerospace, defence and energy markets, is pleased to announce the UK Ministry of Defence has awarded Meggitt Training Systems a £10M ($16M) contract to meet an enhanced targetry requirement for the British Army Training Unit Suffield (BATUS) in Alberta, Canada. This is the Army's premier live-fire range for operational pre-deployment training, which is changing to reflect the complexity of modern combat. BATUS is unique in scope and size (an area slightly larger than Wales) and is the ultimate testing ground for the British Army preparing for Afghanistan and other demanding conflicts.
This highly competitive tender is the culmination of an extensive period of engagement with the MoD, during which Meggitt Training Systems identified the best-value solution to the unique and extreme environmental requirements of the vast BATUS prairie. This multi-million dollar contract, some 40 years after the British Army started training there, will modernise all targetry with over 1,000 light and heavy deployable smart targets incorporating near-miss and zonal scoring systems. Data collected in real time from these new wireless targets allows the trainer to deliver detailed performance reviews to trainees.
Terry Twigger, Chief Executive of Meggitt, commented:
"Supplying best-in-class targetry for the British Army's most important live-fire range is a strong complement to our premier position in US military live-fire. The UK Ministry of Defence is already one of our most important customers for our virtual DCCT* training systems, so I am particularly pleased we will be able to extend the relationship to include our next generation live-fire targetry."
*DCCT is a simulator system that provides direct, indirect and tactical training up to section level, incorporating training for small arms, Mortar Fire Control (MFC) and missile systems such as the Light Forces Anti-Tank Guided Weapon (LF ATGW).
