Aggreko commissions 220 MW gas-fired power plants in Africa

Aggreko plc, the world leader in the supply of temporary power and temperature control, has brought on-line two gas-fired power plants in Africa with an aggregate capacity of 220 MW.

In Côte d'Ivoire, Aggreko has successfully commissioned 100 MW of additional generation, taking the total capacity of the Vridi plant to 200 MW. On 1 July, the new capacity was officially inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Côte d'Ivoire, His Excellency, Daniel Kablan Duncan, during a ceremony at the project site in the capital Abidjan. The event was also attended by the UK Minister for Africa, The Right Honourable Mark Simmonds MP and the Côte d'Ivoire Minister of Mines and Energy, The Honourable Adama Toungara. Senior management of CI-Energies and Aggreko were also in attendance.

On 15 June Aggreko also completed the commissioning of 122 MW of gas-fired plant at Ressano Garcia in Mozambique. This second phase of what is the world's first cross-border interim power plant is now supplying 90 MW to NamPower, the Namibian state utility and 32 MW to EDM, the Mozambican electricity supply utility. The total capacity installed in Ressano Garcia now exceeds 230 MW, and the capacity is being shared between Namibia, South Africa and Mozambique. The additional 122 MW was brought online 13 weeks from the date contracts were signed with NamPower and EDM.

With these two plants coming on-line, Aggreko now has around 1,000 MW of gas-fired power plants operational. Rupert Soames, Chief Executive of Aggreko commented: "We have invested some £300 million in gas-powered technology over the last five years, and it now accounts for around 40% of our Power Project's revenues. For those customers who have access to gas, it is significantly cheaper and cleaner than liquid fuel alternatives".
