Cobham selected for new Aegis radar systems
EXETER, NH, USA - Cobham will provide major Radio Frequency and Microwave assemblies for Aegis surveillance and fire control radar systems ordered as part of new-build Arleigh Burke guided missile destroyers for the US Navy and foreign customers.
In a deal worth approximately US$40m, Cobham will provide prime contractor Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Sensors with 3700 assemblies for each Aegis system, which has been fitted to several classes of US Navy vessel and shore based locations. The US Navy is so far committed to building eight Arleigh Burke vessels between 2011 and 2016.
The Aegis system is a manoeuvreable low cost Ballistic Missile Defence radar for smaller platform ships such as frigates.
Cobham Antenna Systems Vice President Fred Cahill said this follow on order was testament to the performance of Cobham components on earlier versions of the radar.
"Cobham has supported Lockheed Martin for more than 30 years, supplying major RF-microwave components in the production of Aegis SPY 1DV weapons systems," he said.
"These latest orders point to a relationship based on trust and past performance, that will benefit both companies while providing the US Navy with the best possible assemblies at the heart of its Aegis systems for the future."
