Artilium plc launches new Continuous Location Client technology for Smartphones
Artilium plc (AIM:ARTA) ("Artilium" or the "Company"), the developer of advanced software for telecoms companies and service providers, announces the launch of the Continuous Location Client technology ("CLC") for the Android, iPhone, and BlackBerry platforms in Spring 2011. The showcases for this new product will be at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month. The CLC enables third party application developers to provide location aware apps beyond the handset that are more intuitive and sophisticated than today's conventional location based services apps.
The CLC delivers compelling advantages over traditional location technologies in:
·; Providing continuous location that uses bandwidth and power efficiently
·; Offering location services driven by intelligent processing on the Artilium Presence Server
·; Enabling apps that support smartphone and SIM-based location technologies equally
The CLC runs in the background on the smartphone, using multiple location technologies (including GPS and cell network information) to provide power and bandwidth efficient location data to Artilium's Presence Server. This makes it possible to have a location feed running all day, without emptying the user's battery or using up their data allowance. The locations are all stored on Artilium's Presence Server, ready for intelligent processing.
Server stored location is a fundamental change from applications that check your location on demand. Server-based notification means location-aware applications can be anywhere -the handset, the desktop, or in the cloud. Therefore, user's location can be shared independent of handset, platform, or network.
Server-based location also delivers intelligent location processing. For example, the server can profile a user's movements and determine frequently visited locations, their 'places'. Applications can then register to be notified when a user is at that place (for example, "at work"). From a management, developer, and user's point of view, everything provided by the server is opt-in
Artilium is pleased to confirm that continuous location technology is also available as a Java Applet for SIM cards, bringing the benefits of continuous location to non-smartphone users. For developers, this widens their market from the smartphone platforms to potentially anyone who owns a mobile phone.
Market research indicates that a significant proportion of the business to business marketplace for smartphone applications is looking for continuous location enhancements. The Company believes that the Artilium continuous location enhancement will increase revenues derived from these applications by 20-40% for the application builders, of which Artilium should be able to earn half. There is also potential for Artilium to benefit from the usage of the application as part of the support and maintenance on the infrastructure used. We expect that this new technology will start contributing to our revenue in the second half of 2011.

Artilium - Notes to Editors
Founded in 1995, Artilium develops and sells software solutions to telecoms companies and service providers under its ARTA family of products. Its clients include BT, Vodafone Spain, Ziggo (NL), Belgacom Mobile (BE) Telenetand KPN.
ARTA enables telecoms companies to market to consumers in a highly targeted manner, creating packages which are tailor made to the precise requirements of small groups of subscribers such as a municipality or interest group.
The ability to offer a commercially viable solution for customers to sell their services to small groups (e.g. supporters of a football team), is possible using other technologies but substantially more expensive.
ARTA technology provides:
- A low cost solution for creating a commercial communications network for communities and companies. Used by major Mobile Virtual Network Operators and smaller Operators targeting subscriber bases of less than 1.000
- A low cost, low energy use mobile phone based alternative to GPS for movement tracking for customers ranging from haulage firms through to families wishing to know where their children are.
- A real time, low cost rerouting of calls to provide the cheapest solution to Mobile Network Operator's and Mobile Virtual Network Operators
