Chairman John Young dies It is with great sadness that the Board of Young & Co.'s Brewery, P.L.C.announces the death of its Chairman, John Young CBE, after a long and courageousbattle against cancer. John Young, 85, was the great-great-grandson of Charles Young, who acquired theRam Brewery and founded Young's with Anthony Bainbridge in 1831. Afterdistinguished military service in the Fleet Air Arm during the second world war,John spent seven years with shipping firm Runciman and Moor before joiningYoung's in 1954. He was appointed to the Board in 1955, the year the companyfloated on the London Stock Exchange, and became Chairman and Chief Executive in1962, reverting to Executive Chairman in 1999. John was a tireless and vocal supporter of the regional brewing sector and, inparticular, real ale. He was awarded a CBE in 1975 for services to the brewingindustry and to charity. He was a Freeman of the City of London and of theBorough of Wandsworth. The Board extends its deepest sympathies to the Young family.
