Canadian Regulatory Approval for Stevia
PureCircle (LSE: PURE), the world's leading producer and marketer of high purity stevia ingredients announces the final approval by Health Canada authorizing the use of stevia in foods and beverages in Canada.
Prior to its Friday November 30th approval, stevia was only available as a Natural Health Product, and not permitted for use as a food additive in foods and beverages in Canada. The food additive approval follows Health Canada's evaluation of the extensive data supporting the safety and efficacy of steviol glycosides as a sweetener for food and beverages. The approval opens up another major consumer market for high purity stevia.
Food and Beverages sweetened with stevia from PureCircle are increasingly being launched around the world, from beverages to dairy to confections. Stevia has been approved in most major markets, and is met with growing consumer awareness. In Canada, steviol glycosides can now be used in a wide range of categories, including beverages, breakfast cereals, bakery products, desserts, fruit and nut spreads, confectionary, and table-top sweeteners.
Commenting on the approval, Magomet Malsagov, Chief Executive Officer for PureCircle said, "The opening of the Canadian market is another important milestone in the expansion of PureCircle's global footprint. Following two years of working with Health Canada, we are proud to have played an important role in gaining approval for use of our proprietary portfolio of stevia ingredients. PureCircle's activities in this market are well underway and we are fully prepared to service our customers for new growth."
