Atkins (WS) PLC12 April 2006 NEWS RELEASE 12 April 2006 Atkins signs £65 million rail infrastructure contract Design and engineering consultancy WS Atkins plc (Atkins) has signed athree-year, £65 million contract with Network Rail to undertake a majorresignalling and infrastructure upgrade in and around Basingstoke. The multidisciplinary contract - the largest single project Atkins hasundertaken on Network Rail's infrastructure - incorporates the design,installation and commissioning of a new signal control centre and 185 newsignals covering more than 60 miles of line. The new equipment will becommissioned in three stages, the first part of which is scheduled for Easter2007, the second for Easter 2008 and the final part for August 2008. The UK rail consultancy market, in which Atkins is the market leader*, is drivenby Network Rail's programme to improve the performance, safety and costefficiency of the railway infrastructure. Atkins' existing contracts include amajor resignalling project at Port Talbot, Wales - involving the replacement of82 signals over 22 miles of line - which is scheduled for completion in March2007.
