Notes to Editors

The Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe is the third oldest in Africa, and was formed in 1939, with the amalgamation of the Rhodesian Chamber of Mines (Bulawayo) and the Salisbury Chamber of Mines. The Chamber's function is to promote, encourage, protect and foster the country's mining industry. Its main activities are focused in the areas of economic affairs, industrial relations, the representation of the views of the mining industry to government and other bodies, provision of services aimed at promoting a healthy and safe working environment, training and environmental protection. It also acts as an industry watchdog, with responsibility for establishing and maintaining a favourable image of the industry.

The Chamber aims to be proactive in terms of lobbying to try to achieve growth in mining volumes and the recognition of the industry's true worth to the country.
