APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTOR OF CORPORATE AFFAIRS AND CONTENT DEVELOPMENT

Dublin --23rd November 2010: Independent News & Media PLC ("INM" or "the Group") is pleased to announce that Karl Brophy (35) has been appointed to the new role of Director of Corporate Affairs and Content Development. Karl will join the Group's Executive Committee and will commence his role in January 2011.
Karl is a former newspaper editor, project leader and political correspondent with INM who has worked for the Group in Ireland and, from 2002 to 2007, in South Africa where he conceived and launched a successful newspaper. He rejoins INM from the multinational communications and government relations consultancy, Hume Brophy, where he was a partner.
Karl will manage the Group's internal/external communications and he will also assist the further, integrated development of the Group's content strategies across its leading multi-media platforms and markets.
Group Chief Executive, Gavin O'Reilly, said: "Karl's experience belies his relative youth. He is a successful former editor and a well respected corporate and government affairs professional, who has worked across several international markets. He brings great vision, application and talent to our operations."

A journalist by trade, Karl Brophy, 35, was Editor of South Africa's Daily Voice from 2005 to 2007. He conceived the concept for the newspaper and was appointed to lead the project prior to launch. Within 14 months of launch the newspaper was the largest selling in the region and after two years it was attracting almost half a million readers every day. Karl was previously Associate Editor of the market-leading Cape Argus in South Africa and Political Correspondent of the Irish Independent. He also worked for the Irish Examiner and the Irish Daily Mirror. From 1996 to 1998 he worked as press officer for Fine Gael in both government and opposition. Most recently Karl has been a partner at international communications and government affairs consultancy Hume Brophy, which has operations in Brussels, London and Dublin, where he has advised national and international clients on communications and public affairs.
