Appropriate Use Of ED Treatments

25th May 2005 06:00

Pfizer Statement on Appropriate Use of ED Treatments NEW YORK, May 25 -- Convicted sex offenders should be denied Medicaid coverage and payment for erectile dysfunction medications. States currently have the authority to deny coverage to these individuals as reiterated in a recent communication from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Pfizer is committed to working with Health and Human Services and federal and state officials to prohibit convicted sex offenders from securing ED medication under Medicaid. Pfizer believes it is essential that other Medicaid recipients diagnosed with ED by a physician continue to have access to treatments that have proven clinical benefits. The loss of erectile function can be caused by a number of conditions including diabetes, multiple sclerosis, damage to nerves, and blood flow problems caused by cardiovascular disease. These underlying conditions are often identified by physicians when patients present with ED.
