APPOINTMENT OF NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS

Cable and Wireless plc ("Cable & Wireless) today announces the appointment of Mary Francis and Penny Hughes to the Cable & Wireless Board as Non-executive Directors, with effect from 1 July 2009.

The two new Directors bring substantial executive and board level experience. 

Mary Francis is the Senior Independent Director of Centrica and a Non-executive Director of Aviva and St Modwen Properties. She has previously served as a Non-executive Director of the Bank of England and Alliance & Leicester.

Penny Hughes is a Non-executive Director of Home Retail Group and Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken. She has previously served as a Non-executive on the boards of Reuters, Vodafone, Trinity Mirror, Body Shop International and Gap, Inc.

Their appointment will increase the number of Directors on the Cable & Wireless Board to twelve, including seven Non-executives.

Commenting on the new appointments Richard Lapthorne, Chairman of Cable & Wireless said:

"Mary and Penny will bring a range of knowledge and experience to our Board which will benefit our two businesses, CWI and Worldwide. Mary has breadth of experience as a senior civil servant in the Treasury and 10 Downing Street, and as the Director General of the Association of British Insurers for five years. Penny has an extensive background in consumer products businesses, including leading Coca-Cola in the UK and Ireland. The Board is pleased to welcome them both."

Mary Francis biography

Mary Francis is Senior Independent Director of Centrica and a Non-executive Director of Aviva and St Modwen Properties. She has previously been a Non-executive Director of the Bank of England and of Alliance & Leicester plc prior to its acquisition by Banco Santander. Mary spent the majority of her career in the UK Civil Service including positions as Financial Counsellor at the British Embassy in Washington D.C. (1990-1992), Private Secretary to the Prime Minister (1992-1995) and Deputy Private Secretary to the Queen (1995-1999). From 1999-2005 Mary was Director General of the Association of British Insurers.  Mary is a Trustee of the Almeida Theatre and a Senior Adviser to Chatham House.

Penny Hughes biography

Penny Hughes is a Non-executive Director of Home Retail Group and Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (where she is also Chairman of the Remuneration Committee) and was a Non-executive Director of Gap, Inc. until May 2009. Penny spent ten years with Coca Cola, initially as Marketing Director, ending as President of Coca-Cola GB & Ireland, having spent her earlier career with Procter & Gamble and the Milk Marketing Board. Penny has held a number of Non-executive roles on the boards of international businesses including Reuters, Vodafone, Trinity Mirror and Body Shop International. She is President of the Advertising Association and a Trustee of the British Museum
