Augean Plc ("Augean" or "the Group")
Appeal Upheld for Low Level Waste Disposal
Augean, one of the UK's market leaders in the management of hazardous waste, is pleased to report that the Secretary of State for Communities and Rural Affairs has upheld its appeal for the granting of planning permission for the disposal of Low Level Waste ("LLW") at its East Northants Resource Management Facility ("ENRMF"). The decision is in line with the Environment Agency and the County Council planning officer's recommendations which supported the Company's initial planning application. The disposal of LLW at appropriately permitted landfill sites is consistent with Government policy for the decommissioning of redundant nuclear facilities.
The Group anticipates that ENRMF will be able to start receiving LLW from Q4 2011 and into 2012 and has engaged with the decommissioning sector on a number of contracts. The waste streams will be managed to the highest standards and regulated by the Environment Agency. The waste which will be deposited at the site will typically be construction and demolition materials such as rubble, soils, crushed concrete bricks and metals.
Commenting on the decision, CEO Paul Blackler said:
"We believe Low Level Waste disposal represents a significant opportunity for the Group as we look to continue delivering growth for our shareholders. Whilst we are very pleased with today's decision, we are aware of the strong views surrounding the subject and are determined to work closely with local communities and other interested parties on an ongoing basis to address any concerns."
