AMEC, the international engineering and project management companywhose largest U.S. operation is based in Atlanta, will work withSouthern Company, the premier energy company serving the Southeast, ona major project to install two new clean-air systems in Georgia. £ "AMEC has a long history in Georgia," said Tim Gelbar, Presidentof AMEC's Industrial Americas unit, headquartered in Atlanta."Projects like this one highlight the growth we're seeing in ourindustry and the potential for our operations to grow along with it." £ Southern Company subsidiary Georgia Power awarded AMEC the primegeneral contract for the construction of a new scrubber systemdesigned to remove sulfur dioxide from the existing coal-firedboilers' emissions. £ Part of Plant Wansley's Flue Gas Desulphurization project is thenew scrubber system, which involves the construction of two jetbubbling reactors. The project includes the installation of bypassdampers and ductwork that will divert the existing emission streamthrough new booster fans and the new scrubber system where air andlimestone are injected into the stream, creating a chemical reactionthat removes sulfur dioxide pollutants from the gas stream beforeexiting through a new stack into the atmosphere. This process willalso produce gypsum as a byproduct. £ AMEC already works with Southern Company on other Georgia projectsincluding a civil contract and a project for a dewatering facility. £ AMEC is widely known for its excellent safety record, and BobFasciana, Senior Vice President, Engineering, Procurement &Construction, for AMEC's Industrial Americas unit, said he believesthat record played an important part in winning this contract."Southern Company's annual Triangle Safety Award, which AMEC recentlyreceived, gave us the visibility and earned the attention of SouthernCompany's top management," he said. £ The Triangle Safety Award is a Southern Company honor whichrecognizes contractors that achieve very high thresholds of safetyperformance. Each year it is awarded to fewer than 4 percent ofcompanies holding construction contracts with Southern Company. To beeligible for the award, a contractor must have completed at least40,000 man-hours on a Southern Company project site within the pastyear and have no recordable injuries, no missed work days due toaccident or injury, and no OSHA citations.
