Xeros Technology Inks Microplastic Filtration Deal In Laundry Sector

17th Mar 2020 15:41

(Alliance News) - Xeros Technology Group PLC on Tuesday said it has signed a joint development agreement with an undisclosed commercial laundry business.

The provider of water-saving and filtration technologies said the collaboration aims to incorporate Xeros's microplastic filtration system, XFiltra, into the unnamed partner's commercial washing machines.

Washing textiles containing synthetic fibres, such as nylon or polyester, are a major source of microplastic pollution, Xeros explained. The company's XFiltra system removes up to 99% of these microplastic fibres from laundry effluent, it said.

The device lasts for the lifetime of the washing machine and does not use disposable filter cartridges.

Xeros explained its joint development partner aims to be the first company in the world to provide commercial laundries with washing machines fitted with microplastic filtration.

"This invisible form of plastic pollution is highly damaging to our environment and wildlife, and is one of the ways in which microplastics are readily entering our food chain," explained Xeros Chief Executive Mark Nichols.

"Legislation currently being passed in various geographies will hasten and increasingly mandate adoption of in machine filtration in order to remove microplastics from washing machine effluent streams," noted Nichols.

AIM-listed Xeros shares were trading 36% higher in London on Tuesday afternoon at 0.48 pence each.
