LONDON (Alliance News) - Wolseley PLC said Wednesday that it has appointed Darren Shapland to its board as a non-executive director, with effect May 1, 2014.
The specialist trade distributor of plumbing and heating products said Shapland, who most recently served as Chief Executive of struggling floor covering retailer Carpetright PLC, will also become a member of the Audit, Remuneration and Nominations Committees of the Board upon the appointment.
Shapland left Carpetright in October as the firm projected slumped full-year results, due to a softer UK market and losses at its Dutch business. He stepped down as CEO, with Chairman Philip Harris becoming full-time executive chairman, and Graham Harris, previously Carpetright's trading director, joining the board and becoming Chief Operating Officer.
Before this, he served as Chief Financial Officer of Sainsburys PLC from 2005 before becoming Group Development Director in 2010. He was also Chairman of Sainsbury's Bank. Prior to this he was Group Finance Director of Carpetright between 2002 and 2005 and Finance Director of Superdrug Stores PLC between 2000 and 2002.
Shapland is also a senior independent non-executive Director of discount retailer Poundland PLC, and a non-executive Director of bookmaker Ladbrokes PLC, where he is the Chairman of the Audit Committee.
Shares in Wolseley were trading 1.84% higher Wednesday at 3,423 pence per share, one of the biggest gainers on the FTSE 100.
