Wm Morrison Hopes Fresh Food Will Be Its Online Differentiator

22nd Nov 2013 06:57

LONDON (Alliance News) - Wm Morrison Supermarkets PLC, which has lagged its rivals in pushing online, is betting that a focus on fresh food will lure customers away from rivals like Tesco PLC and J Sainsbury PLC.

In a presentation, the UK's fourth-largest supermarket said it will take the "Market Street" fresh produce concept that is popular in its stores online, allowing customers to hand back fresh food that customers believe is below par, and to choose goods from areas like a virtual butcher allowing a choice of exact cuts and sizes.

The rollout of the online offering, through delivery partner Ocado Group PLC, will start before the end of this year but won't reach London until about the middle of 2014, the company said.
