(Alliance News) - Wizz Air Holdings PLC on Monday said it saw a sharp year-on-year drop in passenger numbers and capacity in September, with figures also showing a deterioration from August.
The FTSE 250-listed central and eastern European-focused budget airline reported a 59% fall in September passenger numbers to 1.6 million from 3.8 million in September 2019, also down from 2.4 million recorded in August 2020.
Capacity in September also fell 40% year-on-year to 2.4 million seats, and was down from 3.4 million seats in August. The airline's load factor in September fell 30 basis points to 64.6% from 94.5% the year before.
Available seat kilometres in September fell 40% from the year prior to 4.00 billion, as revenue passenger kilometres plunged 58% to 2.62 billion.
On a rolling basis to September, passengers were down 36% to 24.4 million, while capacity fell 27% to 29.5 million. Load factor slipped 10.7 basis points to 82.7%.
More positively, Wizz Air opened a new base in Catania, Italy with two based aircraft and five new routes and increased its fleet to 132 aircraft with the addition of two new Airbus A320neo family aircraft. It also added three new routes to Romania, one new route to Moldova and one new route to Germany
Shares in Wizz Air were trading 0.2% higher at 3,174.00 pence each on Monday morning in London.
