Wizz Air passengers surge in October but 12-month results still down

2nd Nov 2021 11:00

(Alliance News) - Wizz Air Holdings PLC on Tuesday reported a sharp rise in flown passengers in October, as the budget airline continued to grow its network despite the setback of Covid-19.

Wizz Air flew 3.0 million passengers in October, nearly tripled from 1.1 million a year earlier, with an improved load factor of 79.5% versus 65.9%.

Capacity multiplied to 3.7 million from 1.7 million.

"Wizz Air announced its major expansion in the Ukrainian market, doubling its capacity there. The expansion comes as a result of Ukraine signing the Open Skies agreement with EU on October 12. The new investment will increase its current fleet to eight aircraft in Kiev International Airport and to three aircraft in Lviv International Airport from summer 2022," the Budapest-headquartered carrier added.

Wizz Air also noted it opened its seventh base in Italy, adding 12 new destinations. It has also announced a new route connecting Moscow with Abu Dhabi from December 2021.

Available seat kilometres in October more than doubled to 6.06 billion from 2.70 billion, with revenue passenger kilometres surging to 4.77 billion from 1.83 billion.

Passengers in the rolling 12 months to October 31 was down 18% to 18.0 million from 21.8 million a year before, which included almost six months before the pandemic struck. Capacity was reduced by 11% to 24.4 million passengers from 27.4 million, but load factor still fell to 73.9% from 79.9%.

Shares in Wizz Air were up 0.7% in London on Tuesday at 4,708.00 pence each.
