Wizz Air Opens New Base And Launches New Services In Romania

6th Apr 2016 11:29

LONDON (Alliance News) - Wizz Air Holdings PLC on Wednesday said it is opening a new base in Sibiu in Romania and launching a service to and from Suceava, also in Romania.

The base in Sibiu will open in August, with four new routes to and from Sibiu International Airport, as well as an increase in weekly London Luton flights to five. It will be Wizz Air's seventh base in Romania at a total investment of EUR100 million.

Suceava, meanwhile, will be Wizz Air's ninth Romanian destination, and will run a service to and from London Luton four times a week starting in August.

The Central and European-focused low-cost airline said it carried more than 4.5 million passengers through Romania in 2015, compared with 3.8 million in 2014. In addition to adding more flights to and from Suceava later in the year, Wizz Air will also establish base operations in Iasi in July.

"Customers in Romania continue to look to WIZZ for low fares to more destinations throughout Europe and the Middle East and we are responding with more capacity, more aircraft, more routes, and more local jobs," Chief Commercial Officer Gyorgy Abran said in a statement.

"As the airline carrying more Romanian passengers than any other, we are very excited about our growth in Sibiu and the addition of Suceava as another new destination in Romania and we will continue to invest in our operations here to ensure we offer the lowest fares to more and more people flying through our nine Romanian airports," he added.

Shares in Wizz Air were trading up 0.8% at 1,890.00 pence on Wednesday afternoon.
