LONDON (Alliance News) - Turbine wind sensor maker Windar Photonics PLC on Tuesday said it has entered an exclusive agreement for software that expands the life of wind turbines.
The Technical University of Denmark has started implementing its software solution into Windar's products, which mitigates extreme loads in order to improve the lifespan of the turbines.
The university estimates it can produce extreme load reductions of between 5% and 10%, improving the operational lifetime of the turbines by a similar amount.
The new software will launch in 2020 as an optional upgrade on Windar's WindEye wind director and speed measurement device.
Windar Chief Executive Jorgen Korsgaard Jensen said: "We are excited to add this load reduction capability to our technology in a way which respects our general 'plugN'play' strategy and which will help our customers to increase the lifetime of their turbines without excessive cost."
"It also enables Windar to increase the growth potential and profit margins available from our existing WindEye and WindTimizer products, which serve the retro-fit market segment of the wind turbine industry," Jensen added.
"Securing this exclusive licensing agreement accords with our strategy to maintain our market leading position and low-cost advantage through ongoing [research and development] and the costs associated with this initiative are in line with our anticipated spend on product evolution."
In addition, Windar said it has also appointed Hong Song De-Beer as its chief operations officer. Before joining Windar, De-Beer was director of global commodity and Europe, Middle East, and Asia account management at Koninklijke Philips NV and had served as general manager of global category management at Maersk SA
Shares in Windar were up 2.2% at 48.04 pence on Tuesday afternoon.
