LONDON (Alliance News) - Westminster Group PLC Tuesday said one of the airlines which suspended some flights amid the Ebola outbreak in West Africa is "understood" to be about to resume those flights and it hopes others will now follow suit.
The security and safety company said Gambia Bird Airlines Ltd, the Gambia flagship carrier, is set to resume flights from London on October 17 as long as it gets final approval from the airline's board.
Peter Fowler, Chief Executive Officer of Westminster, said he was "delighted to see Gambia Bird resuming services and sincerely hope other airlines follow suit in due course".
Westminster manages airport security at two airports in west Africa, in Liberia and Sierra Leone, according to a presentation on its website. It has said one airport has been affected by the Ebola outbreak, but never specified the airport.
Kenya Airways, Gambia Bird and British Airways were among the airlines to have suspended flights to the region due to the Ebola outbreak, although other airlines including Brussels Airlines and Air Maroc continue to operate. Gambia Bird suspended all flights to and from Monrovia in Liberia, and to and from Freetown in Sierra Leone.
Despite this, Westminster said last month that year-to-date airline passenger volumes had increased in west Africa despite the Ebola outbreak, with potential for further increases should airlines resume suspended flights in the region.
Westminster shares were up 0.4% to 41.65 pence on Tuesday.
