(Alliance News) - VR Education Holdings PLC on Wednesday said its Engage platform has been selected for a new 5G virtual reality head mounted display.
The display is currently being developed in partnership with Deutsche Telekom AG, Qualcomm Technologies Inc and XRSPACE, and is expected to be launched in mid-2020.
The AIM-listed virtual reality technology company said the new display will redefine the way people connect, learn, socialise, play and collaborate. Instead of moving a cursor across a grid of icons to open applications as in today's virtual reality experiences, the device will offer a novel user interface where users are represented as a real-life looking avatar and navigate the virtual world.
"5G deployment is about to change this mindset allowing for more immersive experiences, faster streaming services and smaller end user devices making a currently niche product appeal to a mass market," said VR Education Chief Executive David Whelan.
"This new 5G virtual reality device is certainly much smaller and lighter than what we have seen in the past from other manufacturers and we are definitely in touching distance of where virtual reality and augmented reality headsets will actually have the same form as standard glasses," added Whelan.
VR Education shares were trading 3.8% lower on Wednesday in London at 7.70 pence each.
