Vodafone Launches First Holographic Call In UK Using 5G Technology

20th Sep 2018 14:26

LONDON (Alliance News) - Vodafone Group PLC on Thursday said it conducted the UK's first live holographic call using 5G technology for a social purpose.

The FTSE 100-listed telecom firm said it conducted a call between its two UK offices in Manchester and Newbury. The live 3D hologram of Manchester City Women's Football Captain Steph Houghton appeared on stage in front of audience at Vodafone's headquarters in Newbury.

The company plans to involve seven UK cities in 5G trials from next month. Vodafone also said it intends to add Cornwall and the Lake District to its 5G network in 2019 and aims to have 1,000 5G sites by 2020.

"Vodafone has a history of firsts in UK telecoms – we made the nation's first mobile phone call, sent the first text and now we've conducted the UK's first holographic call using 5G," said Chief Executive Nick Jeffery.

"The initiatives we've launched today are designed to ensure that everyone can benefit from the digital technologies transforming how we live and work," added Jeffery.

Shares in Vodafone were trading 0.5% lower on Thursday at 167.96 pence each.
