(Alliance News) - Venture Life Group PLC said Monday that a study showed its mouthwash products were effective in killing the virus that causes Covid-19 in an in-vitro test.
The Bracknell, England-based company develops, manufactures and distributes products for the consumer self-care market.
Venture Life said Cardiff University published a report which found that two of the company's cetylpyridinium chloride-based mouthwashes eradicated the SARS-CoV-2 virus completely within a 30 second exposure in an in-vitro test.
If successful, the mouthwash could be used to reduce the viral load of Covid-19 in those infected with the virus. Viral load is the amount of virus present in a person once that person has been infected.
"Viral load in Covid-19 might correlate with infectivity, disease phenotype, morbidity, and mortality," the Lancet medical journal explained in a separate report published in September.
The Cardiff University report went on to state that the exact formulation of the mouthwash was important.
Venture Life said: "Whilst the CPC technology in Venture Life's mouthwash proved highly effective in the in-vitro study, they also tested a third mouthwash, which also contained both CPC and another ingredient, yet this proved ineffective. Their conclusion was that active ingredients in mouthwashes were not, on their own, enough to rely on, but rather it was the construct of the mouthwash formulations that was the critical determinant of a successful outcome."
Venture Life said it looks forward to concluding the human, or in-vivo, clinical study, with results expected in early 2021.
Venture Life shares were up 15% at 98.71 pence each in London on Monday morning.
