LONDON (Alliance News) - Sports Direct International PLC on Monday said Michael Murray, who was appointed to head up the company's property team last year, is not a director of the firm, contrary to recent press speculation.
Sports Direct said that 26-year-old Murray, who is the boyfriend of founder Mike Ashley's daughter Anna Ashley, has a consultancy agreement with the company, with his primary role to find new sites for both Sports Direct's larger-format stores and its combined retail and gym units.
Murray is not paid a salary and his remuneration is decided by an independent annual review undertaken by the company's non-executive directors, the retailer added.
In December, The Telegraph reported that Murray had been made a director at five companies linked to Mike Ashley, including Sports Direct. The other firms comprise MGM Grand Newcastle Ltd, financial holding company Mash Services, gym company T&M Leisure Reading, and property investment firm McGrove Developments.
The newspaper said that Murray's role at Sports Direct was to oversee a GBP250 million project to roll out its fitness superstore brand across the UK, although it acknowledged that he hadn't been appointed to the board.

On Saturday, The Telegraph reported that Murray has not been involved in commercial property development before and that he had, until recently, been promoting student nights and running festivals.
According to the newspaper, when Murray was appointed at Sports Direct, he had been cited as being a former director of Central London Properties, a company set up in 2014 with only two shares and Murray listed as the sole director.
