LONDON (Alliance News) - Energy storage and clean fuel company ITM Power PLC on Thursday said it has launched its first public access hydrogen refuelling station in South Yorkshire and said it has signed a deal to provide a solar-powered hydrogen refuelling station in east London.
The company said the station has been launched at the Advanced Manufacturing Park and was funded by InnovateUK, the UK public body which provides funding for innovative projects.
The launch has been supported by car manufacturers Hyundai, Toyota and Honda, who will all be displaying their fuel cell electric vehicles at the launch.
"We are extremely pleased to be launching the first of the company's hydrogen refuelling stations today, at this very accessible location off the M1 in South Yorkshire, and to provide clean fuel for the fuel cell electric vehicles that are now available from the auto manufacturers," said Graham Cooley, ITM's chief executive.
Later on Thursday, ITM said it has also signed an agreement for a solar hydrogen refuelling station at The Centre for Engineering and Manufacturing Excellence, located near London City Airport.
The station will be deployed as part of the centre's ongoing HyFIVE project and will open to the public in the second quarter of 2016. The centre has one of the largest arrays of photovoltaics in the south of England, consisting of 717 panels designed to supply 115 kilowatts, which will provide power to the station.
The HyFIVE project is a GBP31.0 million scheme involving motor manufacturers, hydrogen fuel suppliers, the Mayor of London's office, and energy consultancies designed to make hydrogen-powered vehicles a viable and environmentally-friendly choice for European drivers.
"ITM are delighted to announce the agreement with CEME. The deployment of a solar hydrogen refueling station at CEME will provide essential refueling infrastructure for East London," Cooley added.
Shares in ITM were down 1.8% to 27.00 pence on Thursday.
