UPDATE: GlaxoSmithKline Opens GBP56 Million Facility In Ware

18th Apr 2016 09:51

LONDON (Alliance News) - GlaxoSmithKline PLC said Monday it is opening a new GBP56 million respiratory manufacturing facility in Ware, which it said will create 150 new jobs in the UK.

The new facility is 4,500 square meters, and is an expansion to the company's existing manufacturing at Ware for its Ellipta inhaler.

Glaxo said that this new facility is expected to nearly double production of the Ellipta inhalers at Ware to at least 37 million per year by 2017, 95% of which will be exported.

"This new facility demonstrates our commitment to manufacturing in the UK which continues to be a very positive environment for life sciences investment. We currently export Ellipta inhalers from Ware to over 74 countries and the new facility opened today will increase capacity to meet growing demand for our new portfolio of respiratory medicines worldwide," said Chief Executive Officer Andrew Witty.

Separately the pharmaceutical giant said it has begun a phase II study into the efficacy and safety of GSK3196165 for inflammatory hand osteoarthritis. This is a condition which causes damage to the surface of joints leading to joint pain and stiffness.

Shares in GlaxoSmithKline were up 0.1% at 1,507.50 pence Monday morning.
