Strasbourg, France (Alliance News) - The European Parliament has approved new rules aimed at curbing smoking, including larger graphic warnings on tobacco products and a phase-out of menthol cigarettes.
"The new measures are a big step forward for tobacco control, and will help to prevent the next generation of smokers from being recruited," said British EU lawmaker Linda McAvan, who shepherded the proposals through the legislature.
The parliament approved the measures in a 514-66 vote, with 58 abstentions.
EU governments are now expected to grant the final approval to the tobacco reforms on March 14. dpa amh mga
