LONDON (Alliance News) - Anglo American PLC Wednesday said it has completed an agreement which fully resolves 23 stand-alone silicosis claims made against it between 2004 and 2009.
The global mining and minerals producer said Anglo American South Africa reached the settlement without admission of liability.
The company said the terms of the agreement remain confidential and that it continues to deny any liability regarding the case.
Anglo American South Africa is one of many companies facing class-action litigation in South Africa. The cases involve thousands of former mine workers who are claiming that companies were liable for their contraction of silicosis and silicotuberculosis from excessive dust at mines.
In July, London's High Court ruled that it had no jurisdiction over silicosis claims filed against Anglo American South Africa, and so the workers had to go through South African courts.
"Our collective objective is to significantly improve the access and quality of care available to all South Africans as well as ensuring a healthy and safe working environment for all our employees," Khanyisile Kweyama, executive director of Anglo American South Africa, said in a statement.
Anglo American shares were up 1.0% to 1,561.00 pence Wednesday.
