UPDATE: 20% Of Biffa Shareholders Vote Against Reappointment Of Chair

10th Jul 2019 13:45

(Alliance News) - Biffa PLC on Wednesday said a fifth of its shareholders voted against the reappointment of its Chair Kenneth Lever at the company's annual general meeting.

The waste management company said it intends to consult with those shareholders who did not vote in favour to understand their views.

"The board is confident that Lever discharges effectively his role as chair, notwithstanding his other board commitments," Biffa said in its statement Wednesday.

Lever was appointed as chair in March last year after Interim Chair David Martin reverted to his previous role as senior independent director. Martin was appointed interim chair in September 2017 following the sudden death of Steve Marshall.

Lever joined Biffa as a non-executive director at the end of September 2016 and, Biffa said, since then he has played a "key" role in guiding the company in its early life as a listed firm.

Early on Wednesday, ahead of its annual general meeting, Biffa said trading for the first three months to the end of June is in line with forecasts.

Biffa said it continues to make progress with its growth strategy, recently completing the bolt-on acquisition for its Collections business of the trade and assets of WasteCollection.com, a small waste collection business.

"The outlook for the year is unchanged," Biffa said in its statement Wednesday.

Biffa shares were 3.3% higher in afternoon trade in London at 204.50 pence each.
