UK unveils new Russia sanctions after drone attack on Kyiv

20th May 2025 11:36

(Alliance News) - The UK government on Tuesday unveiled a new wave of 100 sanctions against Russia after a record weekend drone attack on Kyiv.

The new sanctions targeted "entities supporting Russia's military machine, energy exports and information war", the foreign ministry said in a statement.

They came just as the EU formally adopted a 17th round of sanctions on Russia – "a co-ordinated effort to secure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine", the ministry said.

The UK also imposed sanctions on "financial institutions helping to fund" the war after Russia' invasion of Ukraine, as London and its allies were said to be in talks to tighten the oil price cap and hit "critical oil revenues".

"UK and other Western sanctions are having a severe effect on Russia's economy," the ministry's statement said.

"Every rouble by which we cut Kremlin revenues diminishes Putin's ability to sow chaos, division and disorder across the world," it said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

On Saturday, Moscow fired 273 drones at Ukrainian cities, the biggest drone onslaught of the war, the foreign office said.

"People in Ukraine and across the world have paid the price for Putin's aggression and now he must pay the price for avoiding peace," it added.

US President Donald Trump held a two-hour phone call Monday with his Russian counterpart on ending the three-year conflict.

Trump said after his call that Russia and Ukraine would "immediately" start peace talks.

But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday accused Russia of not seriously engaging in peace talks.

The first direct talks between the two sides, held in Istanbul on Friday, failed to yield a truce and Zelensky accused Putin of sending "empty heads" to the negotiating table.

"It is obvious that Russia is trying to buy time in order to continue its war and occupation," Zelensky said in a post on social media.
