UK to remain "calm" in US trade talks after film tariff shock

5th May 2025 15:16

(Alliance News) - The UK government said Monday that it will take a "calm and steady approach" to trade talks with Washington, after President Donald Trump announced plans for tariffs on films made outside the US.

"Talks on an economic deal between the US and the UK are ongoing, but we are not going to provide a running commentary," said a government spokesperson.

"We will continue to take a calm and steady approach to talks and aim to find a resolution to help ease the pressure on UK businesses and consumers."

The UK is currently engaged with Washington over a trade deal, with the US having imposed 10% tariffs on goods imported from Britain.

Trump said Sunday that Hollywood was being "devastated" by a trend of US filmmakers and studios working abroad as he unveiled plans for the 100% tariff.

The British Film Commission, the government's organisation responsible for inward investment in cinema, called the move "concerning" but added it hoped to continue "a strong, shared history of film-making" with the US.

"While this announcement is clearly concerning, we need to understand the detail surrounding the proposed tariffs," said chief executive Adrian Wootton, adding the BFC will meet with the government "in the coming days to discuss further."

Kirsty Bell, chief executive of production company Goldfinch, warned to the Press Association that the move could leave UK freelancers in the film industry "jobless".
