(Alliance News) - The UK husing secretary is set to meet with the country's biggest housebuilders to discuss the 1.5 million homes target.
Steve Reed, secretary of state for housing, will meet with officials from major developers at a roundtable on Monday to set out how the government and builders must rise to the challenges they face in the sector together.
Along with Chief Secretary to the Treasury James Murray, Reed will seek views from the housebuilders, including Vistry Group PLC and Barratt Redrow PLC, on the proposed planning reforms and discuss how the market is looking.
A source close to Reed said: "The green shoots of recovery are showing, but the Housing Secretary refuses to let a generation down – and neither should industry.
"The government has acted with urgency to tear down the barriers holding back housebuilding – overhauling planning rules, releasing land and backing the sector with billions in investment.
"But too many families have been locked out of the dream of owning their own home. Government and housebuilders owe it to them to rise to this challenge together.
"The housing secretary is keen to hear from developers on proposed reforms and how they see the market – because only by working in partnership will we build the 1.5 million homes this country needs."
Along with the Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook, Reed will discuss recent reforms and acknowledge early signs of recovery while looking at what 2026 can bring for the housing sector.
Reed will reportedly make clear that neither the government nor industry can afford to be complacent about the housing crisis.
The roundtable comes ahead of the new homes accelerator project, which is aimed at speeding up the delivery of large-scale developments across England, entering its second phase.
It also comes as the government enters the next phase of its pro-growth and pro-supply reforms.
Officials from Persimmon PLC, Taylor Wimpey PLC, and the Royal Town and Planning Institute are among those expected to attend the roundtable.
