UK ELECTION: Labour's Corbyn To Stand Down After Disappointing Night

13th Dec 2019 03:50

(Alliance News) - Jeremy Corbyn early Friday said he will not lead Labour into another general election as the party shed seats to the Conservatives.

With the Conservatives forecast to win anywhere from 358 to 368 seats on the latest forecasts from Sky and the BBC, Corbyn admitted it had been a "very disappointing" night as support crumbled in Labour's former heartlands.

Labour is projected for its worst performance at a general election in terms of seats since 1935.

Labour is expected to win between 192 to 202 seats on updated Sky forecasts. The BBC now estimates Labour will win 196.

Corbyn retained his seat of North Islington, while UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson kept his seat of Uxbridge & South Ruislip. Liberal Democrats leader Jo Swinson, however, lost her seat of East Dunbartonshire to the SNP.
