Tullow Oil Finds More Oil Regions In Kenya

15th May 2014 08:04

LONDON (Alliance News) - Tullow Oil PLC Thursday said its Ekunyuk-1 well and Twiga-2 wells have encountered further oil-bearing regions in Northern Kenya.

The FTSE 100 oil and gas exploration company said it was informed by Africa Oil, its partner in the Kenyan Blocks 10BB and 13T, that the Twiga-2 appraisal well encountered an 18 metre region of limited reservoir quality net oil pay after drilling.

The company said a sidetrack well was then set up on the well to explore an area north of its previous Twiga-1 discovery, which has found a 62 metre space of high quality net oil pay in the Auwerwer formation, similar to the Twiga-1 find.

In February 2013, the company announced the commercial value of its major Twiga-1 well in Kenya after flow tests at the well showed a total flow rate of 5,200 barrels of oil per day.

On Thursday, Tullow said the combined results from Twiga-2 and its successful sidetrack confirm the resource potential of the region and the Twiga-2 well is currently being deepened to evaluate the Lower Lokhone potential and a testing programme is planned for later this year.

The company also announced that its Ekunyuk-1 well has found a five-metre region of net oil pay, within a 150 metre region of reservoir quality water-bearing sandstone and an equal thickness region of oil shale after drilling to a total depth of 1,802 metres.

Tullow said that the Ekunyuk-1 well has encountered the best-developed reservoir sands so far in its east flank region but the trap at the site appears to be incompletely formed.

The oil trap is a subsurface pool of hydrocarbons enclosed in rock formations.

The company added that the oil shale at Ekunyuk-1 gives it new options to study the basin's substantial unconventional oil potential.

Tullow Oil shares were down 2.0% to 866.00 pence, making it the worst FTSE 100 faller in early trading on Thursday.
