LONDON (Alliance News) - Travel company TUI AG on Thursday said its Thomson Cruises business has bought cruise ship 'Legend of the Seas' from Royal Caribbean International for an undisclosed amount.
TUI said the acquisition is part of its plans to modernise Thomson Cruises in the UK as TUI expands its hotel and cruise portfolio.
The 63,000 tonne vessel, which has 915 cabins and capacity for 1,832 people, will be renamed 'TUI Discovery 2' and begin operations from May, 2017. It will join a fleet of six Thomson Cruises ships.
The first TUI Discovery ship will be launched next week.
"We continue to grow and invest in our own hotel and cruise portfolio. The introduction of 'TUI Discovery 2' in May 2017 will accelerate our transformation programme for Thomson Cruises. We are moving quickly to renew our fleet. With this ship, Thomson Cruises will be able to capitalise on strong growing demand. It is also our goal to enhance earnings opportunities in the future," Executive Director David Burling said in a statement.
"This ship will offer something for everyone, helping to attract a broad and new customer base," Managing Director of TUI UK & Ireland Nick Longman said in a statement.
Shares in TUI were trading up 0.3% at 1,041.00 pence on Thursday morning.
