Torotrak Says Flybrid Technology Set To Go Into Service With Arriva

12th Sep 2014 08:14

LONDON (Alliance News) - Torotrak PLC Friday said its Flybrid Kinetic Energy Recovery System application is to progress to public service trials, with the technology set to enter service with bus operator Arriva PLC.

Following a successful trial validation programme, the technology will be installed on Arriva buses this autumn, Torotrak said. British coachbuilder Wrightbus exhibited the first prototype bus fitted with the Flybrid technology at the Cenex Low Carbon Vehicle exhibition.

The new bus will be the first fully-mechanical hybrid bus to travel on a public service route in the UK, Torotrak said.

Torotrak provides gearless traction drive technology to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions in vehicles.

"We believe this is going to be the most cost-effective bus hybrid technology on the market, because the financial savings pay for the technology roughly in the first third of a bus's operating life, the system is commercially highly attractive to fleets," said Torotrak Chief Executive Jeremy Deering.

"We believe this will lead to high take up of our technology, delivering a significant reduction in CO2 emissions especially in urban environments," Deering added.

Torotrak shares were up 4.1% at 17.70 pence Friday morning.
