TOP NEWS: Smith & Nephew To Acquire Optical Tracking Firm Atracsys

11th Jun 2019 08:18

LONDON (Alliance News) - Smith & Nephew PLC on Tuesday said it has agreed to acquire Swiss optical tracking technology company Atracsys Sarl for an undisclosed sum.

Atracsys's optical tracking technology is used for computer-assisted surgery, and Atracsys's fusionTrack 500 optical tracking camera will be included in Smith & Nephew's next-generation robotics platform, which is due for commercial release in 2020.

Skip Kiil, global president of Orthopaedics at Smith & Nephew, said: "With the acquisition of Atracsys, we are securing what we believe to be the best-in-class position tracking technology for our next-generation robotic-assisted surgical system."

The Atracsys portfolio includes components which can be used for neurosurgery, spine and dental procedures, and in orthopaedics. Medical technology firm Smith & Nephew said it intends for Atracsys to "continue serving these markets".

The acquisition is expected to close in the third quarter of 2019 and "commercial terms have not been disclosed".

Shares in Smith & Nephew were trading flat at 1,689.00 pence on Tuesday morning.
