(Alliance News) - Ryanair Holdings PLC on Wednesday reported a significant increase in passenger numbers for May compared to a virus-depressed May 2020, on the continued easing of global travel restrictions and the increased rollout of Covid-19 vaccines in Europe.
For the month, the Swords, Ireland-based budget airline said it flew 1.8 million passengers in May, up from 1.0 million in April and from just 70,000 a year ago. It said it operated 12,000 flights during May with a 79% load factor.
On a rolling annual basis however, Ryanair flew 30.2 million passengers, down 75% from 121.1 million a year before.
On Saturday, the Irish government said it would broadly implement the EU's digital Covid certificate from July 19, facilitating travel between EU member states, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland.
The digital Covid certificate will facilitate free movement in the EU for people who have been vaccinated or can provide a negative PCR test taken 72 hours prior to arrival. However, restrictions will remain in place for Great Britain and the US.
Shares in Ryanair Holdings were up 0.2% at EUR17.15 on Wednesday in London.
