(Alliance News) - Jet engine maker Rolls-Royce PLC has signed a contract to overhaul the Royal Navy's Type-23 frigate fleet, the UK Ministry of Defence announced on Thursday.
The Royal Navy said the GBP85 million contract will provide safety support as well as a development programme, in which Rolls-Royce will overhaul 30 Type-23 engines from the UK and from NATO allies Belgium, Portugal and the Netherlands.
The deal will provide the Ministry of Defence with GBP35 million worth of savings, it said. It also will ensure that the Royal Navy has a provision of spares. The Type-23 fleet is central to its operations around the world, the Royal Navy said.
Defence Minister Stuart Andrew said: "This GBP85 million contract demonstrates the UK’s commitment to modernisation through the maintenance of our formidable Type-23s. This work continues the British tradition of supporting our closest allies and solidifying our global position as world-leaders in advanced maritime technology and development."
Rolls-Royce will manage the contract but the overhaul work itself will be carried out by RWG limited, a repair firm based in Aberdeen. The work will create 25 UK jobs.
