TOP NEWS: Reckitt Benckiser Ends Pfizer Business Bid, Glaxo Closes In

22nd Mar 2018 07:45

LONDON (Alliance News) - FTSE 100-listed Reckitt Benckiser PLC on Thursday said it has ended talks with US firm Pfizer Inc over a takeover of the latter's Consumer Healthcare business.

Chief Executive Rakesh Kapoor said: "Our priority remains organic growth, including the completion of the integration of Mead Johnson Nutrition and creating further value from reorganising into two new business units - Health and Hygiene Home.

Reckitt produces an eclectic collection of brands found on supermarket shelves such as Nurofen painkillers, Finish dishwasher tablets, Durex contraception products, Dettol cleaning products, and Air Wick air fresheners.

"We always approach inorganic growth opportunities in a rigorous, disciplined, and financially responsible manner to ensure long term value creation for shareholders. An acquisition for the whole Pfizer consumer health business did not fit our acquisition criteria and an acquisition of part of the business was not possible," Kapoor added.

On Wednesday, the Financial Times reported blue-chip pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline PLC is in "pole position" to snap up Pfizer's Consumer Healthcare business, beating the rival bid from Reckitt.

Pfizer, the newspaper said, is hoping to get as much as USD20.0 billion for the business.
