(Alliance News) - International Consolidated Airlines Group SA on Monday said Aer Lingus Chief Executive & Chair Sean Doyle will become the new CEO of British Airways, effective immediately, as Covid-19 causes job cuts at the airline.
The Anglo-Spanish multinational airline holding company said Doyle will be replacing Alex Cruz, who will step down as CEO & chair of British Airways but will remain as non-executive chair of this unit.
At Aer Lingus, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Donal Moriarty will become interim CEO. A permanent appointment will be announced in due course, the company said.
IAG CEO Luis Gallego said: "We're navigating the worst crisis faced in our industry and I'm confident these internal promotions will ensure IAG is well placed to emerge in a strong position."
"Sean Doyle has extensive experience at British Airways having worked there for 20 years before moving to head Aer Lingus nearly two years ago where he has done an excellent job. I am confident that will continue at British Airways."
British Airways has caught flak recently for its handling of up to 12,000 job cuts as Covid-19 continues to bite the air travel industry. Plans were also made to put many older staff on lower paid, more flexible contracts.
The company was accused of threatening a "fire and rehire" scheme whereby remaining employees would be rehired on downgraded terms and conditions if an agreement could not be reached, PA reported.
Following the accusations, trade union Unite said British Airways only carried out a "partial U-turn" with "still too many BA workers facing threats to their wages and working life".
IAG shares were up 0.1% at 103.65 pence each in London on Monday morning.
