TOP NEWS: Energy Committee Calls For Break Up Of National Grid

17th Jun 2016 06:00

LONDON (Alliance News) - The UK's Energy & Climate Change Committee Friday published a report that recommended a "major change" in the way the UK energy system is operated by breaking up National Grid PLC, claiming the company has "conflicts of interest".

The committee, which is made up of cross-party members to examine the activities and policy of the Department for Energy & Climate Change, has called for a move toward local energy compared to one national network that distributes energy around the country.

"National Grid's technical expertise in operating the national energy system must be weighed against its potential conflicts of interest. The Independent System Operator model has worked in the US. It is time for it to be brought to these shores," said Angus Brendan MacNeil, chair of the committee.

"Local energy is here, with astonishing growth in generation connected directly to regional networks. distribution network operators remain somewhat blind to their energy flows and passive in managing them. Distribution network operators must transition to a more active role as Distribution System Operators so that they can use smart technologies to manage ever-more complicated energy flows."
